Video Savant Blog - HDTV Programming

From the official US public launch of digital television in late 1998, few individuals or companies have done more to bring HDTV into the mainstream than Mark Cuban and his HDNet and HDNet Movies channels.

That makes it understandable how one might get a a little overexcited about a recent news report that details the latest capital spending approvals moving across Cuban's desk.

From endgadget:

It appears that Mark Cuban wants to continue to set the bar high and has announced that he has already pre-ordered a few of those new 4K Red Digital Cameras that it seems everyone can't stop talking about.

The reason there is so much buzz about these new cameras is because they record at 4520x2540 and offer professional quality at a fraction of the cost, sure they still cost $17,500, but evidently that is less than current Hollywood grade digital cameras can be rented for today.
This is definitely interesting news, but it's highly doubtful that we're going to see consumer applications for anything beyond 1080p for at least a decade, and probably longer. Even the rosiest estimates from the Consumer Electronic Association put current HDTV penetration at just over 25% of US households, so it's far too early to be thinking about playing resolution leapfrog.

It seems more likely that Cuban's interest in these cutting-edge cameras would be related to the ongoing efforts by his Magnolia Pictures property to produce films that are simultaneously debuted in theaters, available on DVD and broadcast on HDNet networks.

The additional resolution of those Red Digital cameras would come in very handy for digital cinema exhibition, but there's little chance this development will lead to SuperDuperHDNet bikini babes anytime soon.
