[ Q ] I've noticed that some people online share their settings after calibration. So, why should I pay for calibration when I can get the settings for free?

[ A ] While the concept of sharing calibration settings has a lot going for it from an all-for-one-and-one-for-all online camaraderie standpoint, this practice comes up seriously short from an imaging science perspective.

HDTVs are very complex systems, composed of many interacting components with hundreds (if not thousands) of underlying settings. As a result, replicating a small subset of the user or service settings from one display to another isn't likely to yield results significantly better than the factory settings.

And there's a very real possibility that sharing settings in this way could make things worse.

Calibration requires a systems-based approach that encompasses not just the display and the video sources connected to it, but also the viewing environment in which it resides.
