[ Q ] What sort of questions should I ask when I'm talking with a prospective calibrator. Will a calibrator provide me with customer references?

[ A ] One of the better ways to qualify a prospective calibrator is to ask him about his prior experience in working on displays that are the same or similar to what you own -- this could be the same brand and model, or a prior-year model from the same manufacturer. Also, be sure to ask about the specific adjustments that the calibrator would perform for your television and, of course, the cost involved.

It's also a good idea to quiz a prospective calibrator about the equipment that would be used on your display, and to have the calibrator explain to you why that's appropriate. It's also worth asking the calibrator whether the color analyzer to be used on your display has undergone annual re-calibration, and if so, the last time that was done.

Asking for references is definitely a good idea. Bear in mind that it might take a day or two for the calibrator to organize this for you. Putting you in contact with a customer will normally require that the calibrator check in with the customer to see if the customer is willing to speak with you, and if so, to identify times and dates that are convenient. No doubt you'll appreciate the same courtesy if your calibrator requests a reference from you in the future.

In some cases, a calibrator may also be able to direct you to online reviews of his work. If online reviews exist, it may be possible for you to make direct contact with the reviewer, so that you can ask follow-up or more detailed questions. Many of the calibrators listed in the ISF Forum Business Directory invite reviews from customers and those reviews are available to all ISF Forum visitors.
