[ Q ] I've noticed there are calibrators who haven't been through ISF training, and some of them appear to have very good reputations. Is there a risk in hiring a calibrator who wasn't trained by the ISF? And is there any benefit in hiring a calibrator listed at the ISF Forum?

[ A ] Yes. there are a few well-respected, veteran calibrators who haven't undergone Imaging Science Foundation training...and at the same time, we acknowledge that not every single calibrator who passes the ISF final exam is going to turn out to be a world-class calibrator.

But we do think ISF training should be considered a prerequisite for anyone who's considering entering the calibration field. And we believe it's especially wise to screen for ISF training when you're thinking of hiring a calibrator.

We highly recommend the training offered by the Imaging Sciences Foundation, both for the fundamental grounding it provides in video concepts and standards and for the initial hands-on calibration experience it includes. In fact, we routinely recommend the course to customers who have no interest in working as a calibrator but want to learn more about imaging science than can be conveyed during an in-home calibration session.

We also believe the ISF Forum is the best place to find a qualified calibrator, as every calibrator listed in the ISF Forum Business Directory has successfully passed the ISF exam and has registered professional calibration equipment into the ISF's central database. And every ISF Forum calibrator pays an annual subscription fee in order to have access to the ISF Forum Library, a wide-ranging database that already includes more than 14,000 calibration-specific articles, covering products from more than 70 HDTV manufacturers around the world.

The ISF Forum Library counts among its 200+ membership many of the world's most experienced and highly regarded video calibrators. One of the key benefits of ISF Forum Library membership is access to the collective intelligence of industry leaders who have a solid reputation for professionalism and an unmatched willingness to share their expertise with fellow members.
